Today’s verse comes from Philippians 4.

We have so much to be Thankful for – let us not forget to Rejoice in the many blessings the Lord, our God has shared with us.

The blessings of family and friends and loved ones. Blessings of Children to remind us how to smile more and find fun in just about anything!

“Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say, Rejoice.

Let your forbearance be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:4-8

From August 8th to 24th, the Summer Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China. The best athletes from around the world will be gathering to compete against one another in an attempt to win a reward known as an Olympic gold medal. The Olympic gold medal is one of the most coveted prizes in the world of sports.

The excitement over the Olympic Games reminds me of the film entitled Chariots Of Fire. It is one of my favorite films. It is the story of two men who competed in the 1924 Olympic Games that were held in Paris, France. Both of the men, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, won gold medals in track during those Olympic Games. However, the two men were very different. Harold Abrahams ran for his own glory while Eric Liddell ran for the glory of God. In fact, Eric Liddell refused to run in 100 meters race, which was the event he had trained for, because the race was held on a Sunday. Still, God honored him and he was able to compete in the 400 meter race. The amazing thing is that he was able to win a gold medal in that event.

All of us who are Christian are also running a race. It’s the race of life. We are also seeking to win a prize. Paul refers to it as a “crown that will last forever” in I Corinthians chapter 9, verse 25. In other words, it is even more valuable than any Olympic gold medal because its value will not diminish with time. However, Paul also tells us in that verse that we’re not going to win that prize unless we train. As he put it, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” In Paul’s day they held athletic games that were similar to our modern day Olympics. The athletes who win the “crowns” or Olympic gold medals in track and field are those athletes who train for the events in which they compete. In other words, they work very hard at preparing for their race.

Those of us who are Christians also need to work very hard at the race we’re involved in. That means that we need to work as hard at getting into a good spiritual condition as the Olympic athletes work at getting into a good physical condition. It reminds me of what Paul says in verse 7 of I Timothy chapter 4: “Train yourselves to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for this life and the life to come.” In other words, spiritual training is more valuable than physical exercise. After all, physical exercise only benefits us as long as we are physically alive, but spiritual training makes us better people while we live in this world and it also prepares us for life after death.

So those of us who are Christians need to engage ourselves in a program of spiritual training or exercise. That means that we can’t afford to be spectators sitting on the sidelines watching other Christian athletes compete. We all need to train ourselves to be godly or God-like in the way we live our lives in this world. I have read many books on spiritual disciplines. Two of the best I’ve read that apply to all Christians are Spiritual Disciplines For The Christian Life by Donald Whitney and The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg. Dennis and Barbara Rainey have also written excellent books on spiritual disciplines for men and women entitled Disciplines For A Godly Man and Disciplines For A Godly Woman. I am convinced that if we’re going to become well-conditioned spiritual athletes we must train ourselves to be godly by practicing the spiritual disciplines that are talked about in the Bible. The spiritual disciplines include things like Bible study, prayer, worship, service, evangelism, and generosity. Practicing spiritual disciplines like that require some effort on our part. However, if we do those things we will develop the spiritual strength we need to live a godly life in this world. Then, when our life in this world is over, God will reward our efforts by giving us a prize that is worth far more than any Olympic gold medal. That’s something worth training for!

In His Service,

Pastor David Vetter

Everyone enjoys a little encouragement. Whether it comes from your favorite Sunday School teacher or the fellow Church member who offers a kind word. The power of an encouraging word can be incredible.

“Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassions, and God of all encouragement; who encourages us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to encourage those who are in any tribulation whatever, through the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged of God.

Because, even as the sufferings of the Christ abound towards us, so through the Christ does our encouragement also abound. But whether we are in tribulation, [it is] for your encouragement and salvation, wrought in the endurance of the same sufferings which *we* also suffer, (and our hope for you [is] sure;) or whether we are encouraged, [it is] for your encouragement and salvation: knowing that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also of the encouragement.” 2 Corinthians 1: 3-7

During the month of May I spent a great deal of time reading and studying the book Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis. That book is part of a series of children’s books known as the Chronicles of Narnia. Of course, C.S. Lewis himself made it clear that his books were much more than just children’s stories. They were intended to teach us important spiritual lessons about our relationship with Christ, who is represented by the lion Aslan in the stories about Narnia.

One of the great spiritual lessons we can learn from the book Prince Caspian takes place in the final chapter of the book. In that chapter Prince Caspian finally meets Aslan. After Peter introduces Caspian to Aslan, Aslan says to him: “Welcome, Prince. Do you feel yourself sufficient to take up the kingship of Narnia?” “I – I don’t think I do, sir,” Caspian replies, “I’m only a kid.” “Good,” Aslan says, “If you had felt yourself sufficient, it would have been proof that you were not.”

Prince Caspian was humble to admit that being the King of Narnia was more that he could handle. Aslan was pleased with his response because it meant that he would be willing to look to Aslan himself for the wisdom and strength he needed to rule Narnia. We need to have the same attitude toward those things God has called us to do for Him in our world today. We need to understand that we can’t handle them in our own strength. We need God’s help. As Paul puts it in II Corinthians chapter 3, verse 5: “Not that we are competent (or sufficient) in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence (our sufficiency) comes from God.” Of course, the good news is that we can rely on God to help us. As God Himself says in Isaiah chapter 41, verse 10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” No wonder Paul was able to say in Philippians chapter 4, verse 13: “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”

In a recent issue of Leadership magazine, a pastor by the name of Richard Mylander told a story of something that happened to him while he was on his way to a conference in Colorado. He was driving uphill on a major interstate in Colorado when he overtook a freight train going in the same direction at a slow speed. The train was being pushed uphill by two locomotives that sounded as if they were straining at full power. At first he wondered if that’s how trains operated in mountainous terrain. However, a few minutes later he gradually came alongside the front of the nearly mile-long string of cars. That’s when he saw five more locomotives pulling the train. That made seven locomotives in all. Where Richard came from, he rarely saw more than three locomotives. However, this train had seven locomotives. Richard said that as he thought about all those locomotives, God spoke to him and taught him an important spiritual lesson. He said that he could identify with the two locomotives in the back of the train pushing with all their might. He had been straining under a very heavy work load for some time. The stress that he felt was like pushing a train load of cars uphill. He was wondering if he had the strength to keep going. However, then God drew his attention to the five locomotives at the front of the train who were helping to pull the load. And Richard said, “I thought, how like God. When I am pulling a load uphill with all the strength I have and I feel like my energy is depleted, God shows me that He is in the lead, pulling with a power far greater than mine.”

I know that many of us in this church are carrying very heavy loads. We are doing what God has called us to do. However, like Richard, we are exhausted and we wonder if we have the strength to keep going. If so, we need to remember that we can rely on God to help us handle the load. In fact, we must learn to rely on His strength. After all, if we think we are strong enough to do what God has called us to do in our own power, it would be proof that we are not.

In His Service, Pastor David Vetter

We recently completed a 50 day spiritual adventure on becoming the church God wants us to be. J. Daniel Lupton wrote a book for that spiritual adventure entitled, I Like Church, But. In his book he writes about the future of the church. He points out that the ultimate future of the church in heaven is guaranteed by Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. However, the future of the church in this world doesn’t just depend on the Lord. It also depends on those of us who are a part of the church in this world. In Matthew chapter 16, verse 18, Jesus promised: “I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” So we can be very sure that the Lord will do His part to give our church a great future here on this earth as well as in heaven. However, He also expects us to do our part. In fact, in the very next verse in Matthew chapter 16 He gave what He called “the keys of the kingdom” to Peter and His other disciples.

I like what Dan Lupton writes about the keys to the kingdom in his book. He writes: “A key is an indication of ownership. My friends and neighbors do not have keys to my house. They only come in when I unlock the door and welcome them in. Peter and the other apostles opened the door of faith to the Jews at Pentecost (Acts chapter 2), to the Samaritans (Acts chapter and to the Gentiles (Acts chapter 10). Christ … gives us the keys and wants us to accept an ownership role to open the door to His kingdom for others … When you go to a shopping mall, you are a consumer, not an owner. You don’t hold the keys to the stores. You just stop in when they’re open, pick up what you need, and leave. What about your church? Is it your home, to which you hold a key? Or do you treat your church like a store that benefits you when you need it, but doesn’t require you to take an owner’s responsibility? Your church will have a brighter future when you, along with the rest of your congregation members, say, ‘This is my church. I hold one of the keys to its future.’”

I agree with Dan. I believe that every one of us who belong to this church holds one of the keys to its future. Each one of us needs to take an owner’s responsibility for its future. As I thought about that, I came up with several ways we can all take an owner’s responsibility for the future of our church.

First, we can pray faithfully for our church. I believe that is the most important thing we can do for our church. After all, Jesus Himself said in verse 12 of Matthew chapter 21: “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” So Jesus wants our church to be known as a house of prayer. In Hebrews chapter 7, verse 25, we’re told that Jesus Himself “always lives to intercede” for us. Those of us who are His followers need to follow His example in the way we pray for one another. As Paul puts in Ephesians chapter 6, verse 18, we should “always keep on praying for all the saints.” That means that those of us who make it our goal to attend prayer meeting and pray for the people on our prayer list every week are those of us who are taking ownership for the future of our church.

Second, we can attend church faithfully. When Jesus was on earth, He attended church regularly (see Luke chapter 4, verse 16) and He expects His followers to do the same. In verse 25 of Hebrews chapter 10 the Lord commands us to “not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another …” So our Lord expects us to attend church faithfully so that we can give one another the encouragement we need to keep living the way God wants us to in this world. Of course, when we love the Lord and His people, church attendance becomes a delight and not just a duty. As the psalmist David exclaimed in Psalm 122, verse 1: “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” So those of us who make it our goal to attend church every Sunday we can are those of us who are taking ownership for the future of our church.

Third, we can faithfully support our church with our financial gifts. As Paul put it in I Corinthians chapter 16, verse 2: “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income” to give to the church. In the Old Testament, the Lord Himself set that amount as a tithe or 10 percent of a person’s income (see Leviticus 27:30). According to Malachi chapter 3, verse 10, the Lord promised a special blessing to those people who bring their tithes to His house. In the New Testament, the Lord doesn’t talk a lot about our responsibility to tithe. However, He challenges us to give sacrificially, encouraging us to follow the example of Jesus Himself who gave sacrificially to us (see II Corinthians 8:7-9). That seems to set an even higher standard for giving to the church. So those of us who make it our goal to give as generously and sacrificially as we possibly can to support the work of our church are those of us who are taking ownership for the future of our church.

Fourth, we can faithfully serve the Lord in the church. According to Mark chapter 10, verse 45, Jesus did not come to this earth “to be served, but to serve…” He wants us to follow His example. That means that when we come to church we will not ask what our church can do for us. Instead, we will ask what we can do for our church. As Paul puts it in verse 58 of I Corinthians chapter 15, “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” So the Lord wants those of us who are His followers to wholeheartedly work to make things happen in our church instead of just sitting back and watching things happen. That means that those of us who make it our goal to work for the Lord in some way in our church are those of us who are taking ownership for the future of our church.

I pray that all of us who are members of West Haysville Baptist Church will take ownership for the future of our church. After all, as J. Daniel Lupton puts it in his book: “Your church will have a brighter future when you, along with the rest of your congregation members, say: ‘This is my church. I hold one of the keys to its future.’”
